Local 393 aiding "Radium Girl" statue effort
Jan 07, 2011
Laborers Local 393, serving the Illinois Valley, has committed its effort, including holding fundraisers, for erection of a "radium girl" statue in Ottawa, Illinois.   In the 1920s, clock factories in the area employed young women to paint radium on the clock hands.  Many would curl their brush by putting it into their mouths as they were painting, thus exposing themselves to radium poisoning.   The Ottawa Times recently had a story about the effort.
