Laborers 393 awards scholarships

Laborers Local 393 scholarship winners, August 10, 2010.

On Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at their regular monthly union membership meeting, Laborers’ Local Union 393 members gave out nine scholarships to children of their members, who of which have graduated from High School and are enrolled and attending college this fall.

 

Laborers’ Local Union 393’s Scholarship Program began in 1987 and is in its 23rd year. Members have given out 197 scholarships to date. Each scholarship is worth $300.00 a piece. A framed certificate is also given to each recipient and their names engraved on a plaque that hangs in their Union hall at 142 Lincoln Street in Marseilles.
 
This years recipients are:
 
Tanner Barra: from Marseilles, son of Local 393 Union member Timothy Barra. Tanner is a 2010 graduate of Marquette High School in Ottawa. He was a member of Key Club, Order of the M Club and participated in the Labor of Love Program repairing homes for elderly and handicap families. He was a member of the Football Team for four years and played Baseball all four years. He was awarded “Rookie of the Year” his Freshman year, also was awarded “Most Improved”, First Team all Conference and Illinois State Honorable Mention. Tanner is enrolled at Waubonsee Community College in Aurora to study Criminal Justice and receive a Scholarship to play Baseball.
 
Bridget Brockman: from Grand Ridge, is the daughter of Local 393 Union member Andre Brockman. Bridget is a 2008 graduate from Ottawa Township High School. She was on the National Honor Society and was on the Honor Roll all four years. She also was a member of the Key Club and played on the Basketball and Volleyball Team for four years. Bridget will attend Illinois State University in Normal majoring in Elementary Education.
 
Jessica Carpenter: of Ohio is the daughter of Local 393 Union member Joe Carpenter. Jessica is a 2010 graduate of Ohio High School. She was on the Honor Roll all four years, had perfect attendance in High School all four years and received the Bulldog Spirit Award. Jessica played on both the Basketball and Softball Teams. She will attend Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon, IL studying to become a Veterinary Technician.
 
Samantha Godwin: from Marseilles is the daughter of Local 393 Union member Katrina Godwin. Samantha is a 2010 graduate of Ottawa Township High School. She will attend Illinois Valley Community College this fall to study Photography and Videography.
 
Nicole Manning: from Ladd is the daughter of Labor 393 Union member Mark Manning. Nicole  is a 2010 graduate of Hall Township High School in Spring Valley. She was awarded the Illinois General Assembly Scholarship, was on the Honor Roll all four years and was on the National Honor Society. She will attend The University of Illinois in Champaign majoring in Accounting.
 
Ariel Pozzi: from Princeton is the daughter of Local 393 Union member Richard Pozzi. Ariel is a 2010 graduate of Princeton High School. Ariel was on the Honor Roll and played on the High School Softball Team. She will attend Northern Illinois University in DeKalb to major in Psychology.  
 
Elizabeth Pyszka: from Spring Valley is the daughter of Local 393 Union member Joe Pyszka. Elizabeth is a 2010 graduate of Hall Township High School in Spring Valley. Elizabeth participated in French Club, PEP Club and won a Social Studies Award. She also was on the National Honor Society and Honor Roll all four years. Elizabeth was on the “Develettes”  Pom Pom Squad and won a National Dance Award. She will attend Illinois Valley Community College this fall majoring in Biology.
 
Lainey Ramirez: from Seneca is the daughter of Local 393 Union member Sandy Ramirez. Lainey is a 2010 graduate of Seneca Township High School. She was on the National Honor Society, Treasurer, Section Leader and High Honor Roll all four years. She was in Band and A Pier Helper in the Spanish Club. Lainey will attend Illinois Valley Community College the fall majoring in English, minor in Art and plans to become an Art Teacher or English Teacher.
 
Lacey M. Walsh: from Ottawa is the daughter of Local 393 Union member William Walsh, Jr. and the granddaughter of Local 393 Union member William Walsh, Sr. Lacey is a 2010 graduate of Ottawa Township High School. She was a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, served as secretary for Class of 2010, Ottawa Sunrise Rotary Student of the Month and was also on the Honor Roll all four years. She was a member of “Do Change Group” (Peer Mentors Program) participated in Community activities Labor of Love, Mission Trip to New York, Volunteer at YMCA for Youth Programs and was a Vacation Bible School Teacher. Lacey was on the Girl’s Swimming Team, served as Captain and was one of the top three swimmers at the Sectional Meet. Also was voted First Federal Bank’s Student Athlete of the Week, also on Girl’s Basketball Team. She will attend Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, IL majoring in Biology to become a Physician’s Assistant.
 
            This Memorial Scholarship is open to all children of members of Laborers’ Local Union 393 that have graduated from High School and want to further their education at a University, College, Junior College, Trade or Vocational School. The memorial was named in honor of Marvin “Bub” Raikes who was a member of Local 393 for 29 years and served as their President for fourteen years. He always encouraged Local 393 members to send their children to college for a higher education to better themselves and their life styles.
