Laborers Local 165's Matt Bartolo, a field reprsentative and organizer for Laborers Local 165, Peoria, has been named to fill a vacancy on the Peoria County Board for District 18.  He is completing the term last held by the late Pat Hidden, who died after a cancer battle on May 24.

A Limestone Township resident with a labor background is the Democratic nominee for the County Board post last held by Pat Hidden.

Matt Bartolo, a field representative and organizer for Laborers Local 165, was selected by a majority of the eight precinct committeemen to represent District 18. County Board Chairman Tom O'Neill said he will present the name to the full board in a special meeting later this month. Bartolo's appointment is expected to be approved.

"I think I've got a good feel for the residents in the district and how I should represent them," Bartolo said Monday. "I would probably have similar approaches to Mrs. Hidden. She was very accessible and approachable to residents, and I think that's important to how a representative should be to the district."

Hidden, 73, died May 24 of complications from cancer. She was first appointed to the County Board in March 2002 and later elected and re-elected as the district representative, which includes Bellevue, Norwood and portions of Bartonville and Limestone Township west of Laramie Street.

Two others also sought the nomination: Mike Mason, who previously held the seat before he stepped down and Hidden took over, and Norwood police Officer Tina Stamm.

This will be Bartolo's first foray into politics. He sought the appointment because he recognizes Peoria County as "proactive and progressive" and wants to be a part of making a difference - especially with issues related to Bel-Wood Nursing Home, which is located in his district.

If appointed by the full board, Bartolo said he plans to seek a full two-year term in November.

"I think he's a young, energetic person I think we need to get involved in our community and these type of positions," said Peoria County Democratic Chairman Billy Halstead. "If he's willing to help the community and get out there and run for office, that shows he's going to do a good job. He has good common sense, and he's a hard worker."
