Bloomington State Senator Bill Brady, Republican candidate for Illinois Governor, recently came out in favor of cutting workers’ minimum wage.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Brady, speaking before the Illinois Veterans of Foreign Wars in Springfield, said "For the state of Illinois to come in and micromanage wages above the federal minimum wage is a mistake."
Brady told the veterans’ organization that he would support rolling back the minimum wage if he was Governor.
Effective July 1, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. By state statute, Illinois minimum wage is set to raise to $8.25 per hour. States are allowed to set a minimum wage higher than the federal rate.
Current Governor Patrick Quinn, Democratic candidate for Governor, said of Brady’s remarks:
"Senator Brady has once again demonstrated his disregard for the hard working people of our state.
"From rolling back the minimum wage to opposing equal pay for equal work and family medical leave, it’s clear that Brady’s completely out of touch with the daily concerns of the working families that are the backbone of Illinois.
"Senator Brady’s solution to our economic problems is to turn the clock back on one of our most essential worker protections. He’s simply too extreme for Illinois."
